Artist Statement

My paintings emerge from a blend of the surreal and the abstract, transporting me to a world beyond the everyday. In this space, color and movement quiet my thoughts, and hope takes root. I invite the viewer to step into this world with me, to experience the same sense of peace and possibility.

In my "Chicken Stories", each brushstroke honors the life of a chicken—free, vibrant, and valued. What began as a personal retreat, a world I could escape to when feeling overwhelmed, evolved into something much larger. Painting my chickens—imagining them jumping on a trampoline, flying in a parachute, or basking at the beach—became a ritual, a place of calm and renewal. But as I learned more about industrial poultry farming, I began to see my paintings in a new light. The joyful backyard narratives I created stood in stark contrast to the reality most hens endure. What started as a way to quiet my mind became a call to reflection—an invitation to rethink the story behind our food and to support ethical, sustainable farming. These paintings celebrate the local farmers who nurture their flocks with care and remind us of the choices we make in shaping a more compassionate world.

My "Majestic Vessels" collection captures the awe-inspiring presence of Duluth’s bulk carrier ships, evoking the smallness one feels when standing beside them. The ever-changing waters of Lake Superior mirror the moods of the lake, while the ships, water, and fishing stand as enduring symbols of strength and resilience. These elements have become my solace, expressed through the movement of my abstract work.

My "Nature of Us" collection explores healing and comfort, recognizing that we are not alone in what we feel or face. It emphasizes how art helps us process emotions and fosters understanding—both within ourselves and with others. I draw inspiration from everyday foods—fruits and vegetables—as visual metaphors, aiming to evoke connection and shared experiences. These familiar elements remind us that comfort can be found in unexpected places, even in the most ordinary moments.

My journey as a fine artist began in the dynamic artist cooperatives of Lowertown, St. Paul, where I first shared my work at art crawls and fairs. Over time, I moved into illustration and authorship, publishing three children's books. Now, I have returned to the canvas, carrying with me 25 years of art and life experience that shape how I see and interpret the world.

Today, I live in Duluth with my husband, son, dog, and chickens, surrounded by the ever-changing beauty of Lake Superior. The rhythmic passage of ships and the quiet presence of my backyard hens continually inspire my work. Water, fruit, and hens have all become symbols of hope woven into my art.
